Panasonic V20 Owners Thread (Settings, Problems, Impressions, Questions)

Hello All,

This is my first post here! I just paid the advance for a new P50V20D yesterday evening, and am expecting delivery today. Thanks to all of you on this forum for the great feedback, which helped me zero in on this. I got it for 99K (I'm based in Bangalore). Will try to post some pics as soon as it is setup. My usage will primarily be for watch DVDs and HD content via DTH (mostly sports), as well as downloaded content.

Now I'd really appreciate some inputs on the following:
  • Configuration / Calibration: Can any of you point me to a good post / guide to do this for a new TV?
  • Voltage stabilizer - Do I need to buy one for this TV? I'm not aware that there are major voltage fluctuations in my area, but I can't be sure as all day we are in office anyway.
  • HD DTH connection - I'm getting good feedback for Tata Sky HD, but they're offering hardly any HD channels right now. Dish TV of course has a lot of HD channels, but I've heard feedback that their picture quality varies a lot with the weather. Does anyone have any personal experience to share?
  • Blue-ray Disc Player - I want to buy one soon, but I'm wondering if it's better to buy one from the US, due to the better models and cheaper price, of course. However, could there be any region code issues with BD players bought in the US?

Thanks a lot for all your help.

Congrats on your purchase , 60k is a good price within Bangalore city limits. No special break in period is required with this set, use it the way you want to but try to keep contrast within 50 .... Also a HD media player like WDTV or Asus O play mini will go very well with this set as far are movies go. This thread has sufficient information am sure you will find it worthwhile ;)

Yes Manu79, you are right about the price.
But the price may further comedown in coming months (as always).

About the contrast, the installation technician from Panasonic, made all the settings (decreased contrast, Brightness 0, Sharpness 0 etc).
He repeatedly said that don't use the "Dynamic" option in Picture modes.

One thing I found out is, in PC mode 1080p resolution is not supported on 42V20 (i verified this from the user manual also), but 720p is supported.
My laptop doesn't have HDMI port (2007 model), so I have to connect it using VGA port only.

Watched few 720p movies(from USB and VGA), the PQ was amazing.

Thanks for advice, but right now I am having a PS3 and planning use it as a media player atleast for a while. As after this purchase I am little tighter on budget

Today I am planning to use the PS3 Media server(laptop) and PS3 to see how the 1080p videos works.

The SD PQ is good (this was my major worry before buying 42V20). Right now I am using analog cable connection. Already requested for Digital Cable. I will update this forum once I verify the PQ with Digital Cable.

Once again thanks to all of you, for helping me with this decision.

Tata Sky HD on my V20 plasma is pretty good. I have NAT HD, Discovery HD, Start Cricket HD, ESPN HD, Star Plus HD....PRISTINE quality :)....SD channels like WB & PIX are also a treat to the eyes.

I was about to purchase a Sony BluRay player last saturday, but dropped the idea after learning from the sales rep that it does not read NTFS drives & play formats like mkv......I am thinking of WD TV live or Xtreamer Pro...I dont know I am confused :(

Guys,
It has been 2+ weeks, I got my Plasma but I am not much convinced with the picture quality of P42V20D. :-(

I know, I have not been able to setup video settings correctly, I tried lot many ways..I tried, True Cinema, Dynamic, normal, etc..
I changed colors, sharpness (doesn't seem any change if I change this component), Contrast, brightness but I cant find one proper setting which could be applied to all..

Many guys said that you need to calibrate but I am not able to find, how could I do that?
I am not able to find Gama settings which you guys just showed to me.. Not able to find "Professional1" profile even.. May be I'm too naive but not able to find these settings menu..
I am using Airtel DTH with my Plasma...If I set a good color/contrast for one channel, it doesnt work for other..

Besides, one guy asked to change Gama, RGB component, I can't find such things in my TV..I have bought TV from Panasonic Brand shop and a guy who came to install TV, just installed and went away..

Please help me..
I also have 2 queries.

1. Video mode.
Although there are quite a few pre-defined mode , I found Dynamic is the best one. Do any of you have any good settings tested which can be applied or any other view like Normal, cinema, true-cinema are better?

2. Also it plays only avi files and not also all avi files but only few avi files.
I tired using USB. Any idea why so and which other files I could play and any software to convert movies to the AVI format which my tv expects?

Cheers,
Krunal

Dynamic contrast gives an artificial look to the picture, are you sure you want that ? It will look like one of those bling bling displays in showroom to attract people ...

Any way here you go to access Professional 1 and Professional 2 profiles Press "Menu" on the remote choose "Setup" look for "IFSCC" .. enable it. Now you should be able to see Professional 1 and 2 listed along with "Cinema" True Cinema" etc...

Adjust the profiles the way you want to but try ot keep contrast at 50 or below, I keep 2 profiles one for normal SD channels another for HD content on DTH, and if one setting is not working for another channel that's not ur TV's problem its the way its being broadcasted cuz those channels were not meant to be watched on an HDTV in first place ;) .. I have noticed differences even in my CRT so a HDTV will only make it more prominent.

Coming to your second query, Playing files off the USB is not a strong point in most Panasonic and Sony models, why you may ask thats cuz they follow to the codec standards stringently:mad: . Samsung or LG is better in file support however even they cant play all the formats available off shelf. All files encoded in XVID format plays fine for me but a dedicated media player( WDTV or Asus O Play mini) is the way to go if you wanna play all kinda files without hassles and is future proof to some extent in terms of codec support.

Hope your queries are answered, if you are still unsatisfied with the set then you should really go for a LED or Laser DLP but your DTH issues will exist even there

Hey Manu, Thanks a ton for your help..By setting IFSCC to On, I am able to access Professional1 or professional2 and I am also able to set gamma and all..

Thank u very much..Yeah, I agree that all channels have different settings and I believe that i must have to configure 2-3 setting for different channels, Movies and games...

Yesteray, I watched Avatar in Full HD and I was so much happy with my TV results...

Hey, one last favor, can u guide me which would be best modes for viewing TV channels and Movies? If possible, pl send me reco. settings..

Cheers,
Krunal

Hey ppl,

I would be thankful if anyone can suggest a good price and the corresponding showroom for the Panny42v20 in Hyderabad... also does the TV play .mkv files via USB?

Panasonic 42V20 cannot play MKV files. We need to buy a Media player like Asus Oplay Mini (has no networking) which supports most formats. I am planning to buy one after some time.

In HYD you can try at JD Electronics, as someone mentioned in other forums as low as 58.5K.

^^ As guru pointed out it cannot play mkvs and it cannot even play all avis. Best bet is to get a media player if you want to have format playback capability for this TV. If you are really worried about format capabilities/ internet features in a TV you should look for LG/Samsung models.

^^^
Exactly Panny n Sony in terms of codec compatibility is very limited and stringent. Korean n Chinese brands will play most but again not all ...
Playback through USB can be considered as a +point but never give importance to that feature, its the display panel Picture quality that matters after all..

Its like you wanna buy a 50 lakhs worth car, but you will opt for the one which has good mini refrigerator , hope u got my point no harm intended... :)

Hi Guys
I need some video calibration settings for V20
The initial period of 200 hours is over now.

Please let me know the settings for optimal viewing.
I mostly watch HD rips.

Thanks

Can anyone tell me what to select as model when trying to add 50v20d to Harmiony 700 remote configuration? I was not able to find th-p50v20 in the list.

Care full with Bangalore Indiranagar Pai electronics they are selling Display piece model 42V20

How can one be sure that the plasma/lcd is not a display/demo piece? When i received my unit, i checked whther the packing is tempered or not. but i couldn't be sure enough. I am however talking of dealers/ brandshop in general.
