Yamaha AVR owners thread

Hello Guys,

I have Rx-v671 with Wharf 9.5(5.1), just need to know when i play movie i need to select 7 ch using Music button on remote to get HT effect but if I select Sur. Decode like Pro Logic seems my 10 DFS (Surrond) not wokring that time.....it should be like this or i am missing some settings ?

Also what should be the best source for the AMP / Speakers. Rightnow i have an 5 years old DVD player without HDMI, Also i have 1 TB HDD from which i play movies....I plug my HDD to my Samsung 40D5500RR to play music as my DVD player dosn't support USB.

Should i go for
Blueray Player...which one?......i ll not required WD live etc to play movies from my HDD ?
or
WD Live.....as most of the movies on my HDD....will there be a big diff in quality even if i play good mkv files ?
or
HTPC........for which i have no idea.....

YPS-If you dont have movie source encoded in true 5.1,you cannot get surr working.
If you are playing DD/Dts,then need to config speakers correctly.sy distance, size etc. This works to get proper surround.

Hi spirovious, thanks for reply....... :-)

well i tried YPAO twice and after that i / wharf engineer had done some manual settings.....I am not sure how to measure distance......size is correct what i have selected.........i think we don't calculate cable length?? correct.....as cable for Surround are 7&8 mtr, for FS its 3 mtr and for center its 2 mtr, SUB too 3 mtr but i know this need to be configure smthing else.....?

attaching the size of my room......have a look.....might be that my room is not big enough for 5.1 ??

What will be the best source ?? :-)

Thanks for reply.....

YPS-Now distance measured is not the wire length, but distance from your sitting position.
So set accordingly.Looking at the diagram, your fronts & center distance should be 11',SW around 12' & surrounds 4.5 feet approx.
Now front/center speakers can be set as large & surr as small.
Make sure that Dynamic range compression should be turned off.Keep Straight mode.Keep Dynamic range Max.You can select in OSD & option button on remote.

This should work.

Hello spirovious.....i tried above settings but seems surround were killing FS so mae that 4'..........DRC should be off always ??? Straight mode dosn't give me 5.1 sound......

Its not possible as long as you are playing 5.1 video(DD'Dts).
You can play certain movies which has true surrounds say Ximen, killbill.Where things movies from one speaker to other(say plains in X-men2).
What does AVR display when you play movies?if its PCM,then you have to change settings in DVD player, set audio as Raw/bitstream.

spirovious....any suggestion what would be the best Source BD/HTPC?

Also what will be the diff if I play movies connecting my HDD to TV or HDD to WD Live ?

thanks for all your replies :-)

Bluray disks will give you ultimate PQ and SQ, but these disks are very expensive. Another option is 720p or 1080p blu-ray rips of size 2.5GB or greater. These usually have 5.1 audio mostly in aac format which most avrs won't decode in correct channel order. IMO a fully configured htpc is the best option for media playback.

Hi baijuxavior.....thanks for your rpely........good HTPC will cost me how much..branded or need to assemable ?? Hope in HTPC i ll not be missing anything which is in BD players ?

HTPC or media player can be a wise choice.HTPC can play almost any format.Media player is simple & easy solution. So choose correctly.

Okies.......and for choosing correctly what should i keep in mind.... ???? Media Player you mean WD live kind of or talking bout BD player ?

Yes,Himedia,Asus & similar one.Make sure which one can output Dts-HD correctly(Himedia does).

Some vendors like zotac have htpc boxes but you need to add memory, hdd, os etc. Assembling is recommended if you know how to do that. A fully configured new htpc will cost you around 15-18K. If you have old desktop pc then you can convert it into an htpc easily. If you are interested I have put my htpc for sale here.

For ease of use a media player is recommended, but they don't have the polished look of an htpc based on xbmc.

Okies......... I need to explore now for HTPC.....will google to get more Gyan on the same......as never thought before for HTPC.... :-)

I remember seeing a few posts on building HTPC in the DIY section of the forum. Maybe going through them will inspire you enough to take it up by yourself. :)

Guys.....

Don't we get 5.1 sound while watching movies on HD channels on TataSky HD ??

I was watching Die Hard 4.0 today and when i was selecting Dolby Sur. Decoder, i was getting very low sound but when i selected 7 ch by Music button sound was good enough......

HDMI cable of TataSkyHD will do best ... correct .....we don't need anything else ??
my setup is tataSkyHD >hdmi> AMP > hdmi > LEDTV

Did you connect a separate digital cable? From HDMI you wont get true surround.Secondly the movie must have 5.1ch sound.

Hi spirovious,

Yes I finally brough Digital Coaxial Cable yesterday and now waiting for any good movie on HD to feel the diff....although i tried switching the HDMI output and Digital output but i didn't notice much change except in HDMI volume was higher.........waiting for good content on HD so that its noticable :-D

Thanks for your reply...... :-)

My 671 went into protection mode and I searched the net for the solutions but none worked.
Above procedure quoted by you only worked and the system came back to life today.
