Yamaha AVR owners thread

A newbie here, bought rx-477 from US a couple of days back. First plugged it directly to 220 v out of excitement and boom. Costed me 3.5k for repair. Got a step down transformer and started using again with my old 5.1 set. After few days it again blew up. This time a rear channel was gone. I also found that my centre speaker was blown too. Service guy gave me advice to go for better speakers. That's when i realized the complexity of the AV world and have kept the AV as a display piece since. Please help me in finding a matching pair of 5.1 speakers which will not harm the AV and give good output. My requirement is for movies and music 50-50, once in a while for house parties. I have auditioNed bose accoustimass 10 and they were impressive, but some expert advice will be really helpful in deciding.

I understand your feelings.. I bought a US model Marantz AVR and have not even taken out of the box because I do not have a step down transformer.

I am new to the club- have a 375(at my native) and a 477(using currently). I liked both but found that the sound of 375 was better than 477..or was it just my feeling??

This is interesting.May be due to less circuits in side, audio signal has shorter path with less caps.I observed recently that Headphone out of YHT299 sounded better than 667.Highs were rolled of,but mids had better weight and authority.

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and already got huge information about audio video product from this forum.
I wish to buy a yht 299 / yht 2910.

Owners of yht 299/ 2910, please let me know whether the power cord of it has 5Amp socket or 15Amp socket is expected.
I do not have any 15A plug point in my room. Can it be used in 5Aplug point?

Bought Yamaha AVR RXV 677. Presently connected to my Onkyo HTIB speakers, missing sub. Not yet fine tuned the system. Planning to replace the speakers in a phased manner. Needed some Suggestions from senior yamaha owners in selecting the speakers.

Does anyone know a good technician who specialises in yammy gear in Mumbai?
I've moved to a new address recently and while shifting I've damaged the power key of my Yamaha DSP-A1000 Amplifier/DSP.

There's no physical damage as such. There's a spring that is behind the power button which seems be missing when I opened up the chassis. I tried to manually turn the tiny power button on and was successful in turning on the amp twice or thrice. However there seems to be no output from the amp on any channel. The rest of the functions are working fine (display, front panel buttons etc.).

Does anyone know a technician who specialises in Yammy gear in Mumbai? I've heard there are some guys on Lamington road. Are they any good? Trustworthy?

This amp means a lot to me because it belonged to my father and has been with us for years and has served us faithfully. I've never had to repair any of my gear coz I'm very meticulous about it's upkeep, so any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

If your primary purpose to listen music and wish to start with low budget, first of all purchase a pair of Wharfedale Diamond bookshelf ranging between Rs. 18,000/ to 24,000/. I own Diamond 10.1 and can vouch the same for full fledged stereo speakers.
When you upgrade the system to home theatre, these bookshelves will perfectly serve as surround speakers and you can replace these with floor standers and you will find several options for FSs too.

With Yamaha AVR, wharfedale, Energy, Polk,Q-acoutic,Dali speakers go well.try to audition them before buying.

Dear all,
I have recently purchased YHT-299 thanks to the guidance of this group. I was trying to play movie in my TV and was using the ARC HDMI option to have the audio output from Home Theater. But it's not working. I had followed all the steps suggested in TV & yamaha manual. Is there any trick which I am missing??

Best Regards,
Nikhil

ARC Should work with the below steps.
1)HDMI out of YHT299 is connected to ARC Enabled HDMI port of TV.
2)ARC is enabled in TV and YHT299.

Where did you buy it from and at what price if you don't mind my asking? I'm looking to buy the same one.

For ARC feature to work, please do the following.
1. Identify ARC enabled HDMI port on your TV. There may be more than one HDMI ports but all of them are not ARC compatible. Refer TV manual for this. Connect your TV through this port only.
2. Enable HDMI control in both the equipment i.e. TV and AVR. Normally HDMI control is disabled for ease of use.
Now ARC should work normally.

It was carried personally by my friend from UK for 290 GBP (Rs 29000/- approximately).

Hi
Even I had narrowed down on YHT 677, but am planning to get it from USA and its priced at approx 380$.
My question to you is, did you have to pay any duty or anything extra over and above you purchase price of 290 GBP? If so, what was your landed cost?

Also, once you have your speakers and the entire setup ready please do let me know which speakers you finalise and how is the overall performance. I still have about a couple of months before i finalise as my people will only be coming in december.

Another thing, the reason I narrowed down my choice was a feature in this model which says there is a dialogue lift and enhancement feature for natural dialogue, which to me seemed very ideal as i watch a lot of drama and dialogue based movies. If you have used this AVR at all and are aware of this feature can you give me an update if it actually works or is it just a marketting gimmick.

Would really really appreciate the feedback. Thanks.

AVR was brought personally by my friend, no extra charges were paid. Presently I have connected it to my old Onkyo HTIB speakers without sub. With the present set up only a marginal improvement in dialogue lift I could notice. (Dialogue lift up to 3 db in three steps I.e 0-3). Surround effects are good when compared to Onkyo. The good feature is HDMI signal pass- through when system is standby.

I have connected my HTPC to YAMAHA -677 and from 677 to TV. I could listen sound only when TV is on. All the connections are through HDMI. I have not noticed this problem with Airtel DTH. I could see receiver in system devices in computer. But receiver is not shown in graphic card audio settings, updated the graphic card drivers, no result. Changed HDMI cables, checked all the TV settings. Presently I am listening music with TV on and display off mode.
