Yamaha AVR owners thread

Gone through the initial impressions

1. The crossover frequency does not affect the lower limit of frequency for speakers which have been set 'Large'. Fronts set to 'Large' means all the frequencies are being sent to the fronts. Crossover redirects the low frequency components to subwoofer only from the speakers set to 'small'. If you want to limit the frequencies being sent to your BS fronts then set them to small manually and then set crossover frequency to either 40 or 60hz (-6db limit for Diamond 220 is 45hz), probably 40hz should be fine.
3. HDMI Audio out - Bit-stream on Pioneer BDP will send RAW (undecoded) multichannel signal to the AVR. It is fine, let the AVR do the decoding :)
4. Press 'Info' button on the front panel, it will switch between the information being displayed options. Select 'Audio Decoder', now you would be able to see the audio signal information Dolby/DTS etc.
5. Try switching off 'HDMI control'.
6. First switch the 'Info' of the AVR to 'Audio Decoder' and see if HDMI of D2H is already sending DD signal to AVR.
I do not have D2H so can not be sure about the settings, check if there is setting for HDMI audio like PCM/RAW, if there choose RAW, if HDMI audio does not work then coaxial, check the thread below. Post STB model number FM would help, probably post here:

Thanks for the details.
I have set the Fronts to "Large".
Now able to see the audio decoding with the info. For DTS-HD MA the display shows "DTS-HD MSTR"

Videocon D2H it shows "PCM" only. I will read the related thread for enabling DD.

Hi,

While watching some movies ( Avatar, Transformers blurays DTS-HD MA/ Dolby TrueHD ) I found that the dialogue is very low. I mean if I keep the AVR volume to a comfortable level the effects are very good but the dialog is too low. Is it because the dialog is completely in center channel for these movies?
It is in 2.0 now without any center channel. ( rx-v477 and diamond 220 fronts)

Is there any setting I can do in 477 to improve the dialog level in 2.0 speaker config?

need suggestion for following combo.
Yamaha rx371 AVR + Energy RC Micro speakers 5.1 + Wharfedale PC-10 subwoofer.
I am getting this for around 30k. Is it a good deal?
earlier I shortlisted Yamaha yht 2910 but got this offer. help me out to choose between these two.
many thanks

Equalizer setting for the mid frequencies may give the desired result.

Thanks for pointing out.
I have adjusted the EQ setting. By default it was set flat. Raised the mid freq band ( It is like a bell curve now )
Also adjusted "Tone control". Default Bass and Treble were "Bypassed(0)". Set to "3" now.
Great improvement on dialogue clarity and over all sound.
Between -40db and -30db I could get good output with the above changes.

The deal looks very good with the listed components. The RX-V371 though old but has all the basic bells and whistles including loss less audio decoding. You need to audition the set for the sound quality and if suits your taste and see the physical condition as well.

I have a question . What is the difference between Yamaha HTR-3067 and Yamaha HTR-3066( which is a part of YAMAHA YHT299 ) ?

Yamaha launched their 2015 models,

The new line-up of AV receivers will consist of five new efforts: the RX-V379, RX-V479, RX-V579, RX-V679 and the RX-V779

they added just Bluetooth and 4K Ultra HD pass-through with HDCP 2.2 support for the RXV -379

:) Welcome.
And also I find the SQ of WAV lossless via the AVR's USB port better than my Asus Media player, seems more balanced. Yet to compare with foobar2000.
Thinking to convert FLACs to WAV, to play via the USB port.

RX-V679 has better specifications.90W, THD 0.06 all frequencies,2ch and 8ohms.

Off-late i am getting the feeling that the 0.06 % THD does not mean anything much. I have a Denon-AVR-1604 with THD 0.08% and a 300B tube amp with THD 2%, but if you listen to both setup the Tube sounds way ahead than the AVR.

May be this is because of the 3rd harmonic distortion in the AVR and the 2nd harmonic distortion in the Tubes.

I am not able to fast forward while playing through USB of rx-v477.( MP3 files in USB stick). The only thing I could do was skip the track to next. The fast forward, rewind buttons don't work on the USB files. Could someone check and confirm? I thought this is a simple feature and should be possible.
Is it a known thing in Yamaha AVR?

A newbie here, bought rx-477 from US a couple of days back. First plugged it directly to 220 v out of excitement and boom. Costed me 3.5k for repair. Got a step down transformer and started using again with my old 5.1 set. After few days it again blew up. This time a rear channel was gone. I also found that my centre speaker was blown too. Service guy gave me advice to go for better speakers. That's when i realized the complexity of the AV world and have kept the AV as a display piece since. Please help me in finding a matching pair of 5.1 speakers which will not harm the AV and give good output. My requirement is for movies and music 50-50, once in a while for house parties. I have auditioNed bose accoustimass 10 and they were impressive, but some expert advice will be really helpful in deciding.
