Yamaha AVR owners thread

I was having problem of HTPC not recognising My YAMAHA receiver 677. After searching in internet and some trial and error methods finally My HTPC is recognising the receiver. I have followed the following steps.
1. I have connected HTPC to Yamaha through HDMI.
2. Disconnected the YAMAHA HDMI out to Panasonic TV.
3. Connected HTPC DVI out to HDMI in to Panasonic TV.
4. After switching on I could see that YAMAHA receiver in HTPC audio devices, I selected the YAMAHA receiver as my Default device and saved.
5. Normalised the HDMI out from YAMAHA receiver to Panasonic TV.

After above settings, I could get audio signal from HTPC to YAMAHA. Earlier audio signal was diverted through TV, and if I switch off the TV, audio signal was getting cut off.

Hi, the logic is , windows recognizes the final device which is connected in the loop.

Ex:
HTPC - AVR - TV ( then you will see your TV name in the output device)

HTPC - TV - AVR ( then you will see your AVR name in the output device)
(This option works only if your TV has ARC)

Both works in a similar method and sound output is also similar, but the flexibility is achieved if you connect directly to TV because you can use the TV as your display even without having to turn on your AVR.

Hello friends,
I am new to this forum.
Kindly help me in selecting a suitable 5.1 ch home theatre system.
I took audition in few shops in Chennai - Reliance Digital and Yamaha square.
I have seen both YHT-299 from RD and YHT-2910 from Yamaha square (sterling music). But, there is no difference and internet search also indicates the same. But, there is a price difference of Rs.10K. 299 is available for Rs.34,990/- and 2910 costs Rs.44,500/-.
Guys at Yamaha square discouraged me from buying YHT-299 and told me that it is outdated and may not get support from Yamaha.

Friends, can I go on to buy YHT-299 ? Please advice.

Thanks in advance.

Regards.

Yamaha cannot deny service for an old product if it's purchased from authorised source. In fact, if you buy from RD, it will be serviced by RD (Yamaha authorised). Also, you can buy extended warranty. There is no point spending 10k more. I'd suggest to go for YHT-299. You can get it at even lesser price from RD. Do bargain

I own YHT 299. My setup includes blu-ray, PC and Raspberry Pi (open elec) on HDMI 1, 2, 3 respectively. TV sound output is connected AV1. The AVR HDMI output is connected to Philips LED. I have enable HDMI CEC on Philips TV (Easylink), AVR and open elec.

I have configured Open elec to give start command to the AVR and TV whenever it is started. The AVR starts when raspberry Pi starts, however, the audio is played through TV and not from YHT 299. The speaker symbol which appears on right of the home theater display does not appear. Only option left is to switch off and switch on the receiver. What can be the problem?

Hi friends,
I am having a small problem with the remote of my Yamaha RX-V671 AVR. The remote control unit has additional capability to control other connected devices by setting it up for this functionality. The same can be set without much hassle.
The problem is the setting for operating such other unit get erased after some time despite the battery of the unit being new.
Can I get some help.

The remote does not memorise settings for additional device although the same is properly set in the remote and works properly when the same is setup. The battery is new.

Dear friends

I had posted this question in another section of this forum but dues to lack of response I am posting it again here since it pertains to Yamaha.

I recently picked up Yamaha V671 from a friend of mine. I have set it up with 7.1 channel. What configuration do I do for my audio settings so I get pure 5.1 or 7.1 audio in all speakers without down mixing the original source. I intend to playback HD movies which have 5.1 or 7.1 audio format through Minix U1 from ext HDD.

As per the manual - Under Stereo there is 2ch and 7ch. But even in 7ch stereo, when you playback multi channel source, the unit down mixes the source to 2 ch and the outputs in all 7 speakers. (I guess that's why the stereo term)

However when I went through the manual in more detail, there is one option of "Enjoying unprocessed playback" and under this there is - "Enjoying unprocessed sounds in original channels (straight decode)". It describes that in this mode each speaker produces each channel audio signal directly. For 2ch its front two speakers. For multi channel sources this unit will produce unprocessed multi channel sounds.

Then there is "Enjoying unprocessed multi channel sounds (surround decoder)". This outputs even 2ch to multi speakers. But works same as straight decode mode for multi channel sources. This has SUR DECODE -> Pro Logic, PL II Movie, PL II Music...

Now which setting do I select when I want to:-

1. Play 5.1/7.1 ch movies through Minix U1 connected on HDMI port on their original channels/speakers without downsizing?
2. Play mp3 songs or internet radio or any 2ch source on all speakers?
3. Does it mean that Surround Decoder's only function is to convert 2 ch to multi channel so that in can play on all speakers?

Sorry for sounding trivial but any help will be useful...

Thanks in advance.

As per my knowledge:

1> Select Straight or Straight enhancer mode, you can even use a DSP mode like "Standard" which is meant for movies. This will decode the sound to 5.1 or 7.1 and will not mix the channels provided the source sound is either 5.1 or 7.1
2> Straight enhancer is the best IMO, , 2ch Stereo will downmix multi channel audio to 2 channels and playback using only the front speakers + SW (if you have selected one). If you want 2 channel music in all speakers select 5 Ch Stereo or 5 Channel Enhancer.
3> Surround decoder is used to playback 2 channel sound using 5 channels, example Dolby prologic/PLII Movie/PL II Music etc.

Hope this answers your queries.

Ciao.

So for all movies which have 5.1 or 7.1 audio, I select Straight (enhancer is ON by default) to get true channel delivery that is no down mixing and each channel is fed to whichever it is meant for.

This part is understood. So I play all my mp3 songs (2 ch) in 7ch stereo mode to get it downsize to 2 ch and fed to all 7 ch.

3> Surround decoder is used to playback 2 channel sound using 5 channels, example Dolby prologic/PLII Movie/PL II Music etc.
Now here is my doubt... if 7ch stereo also plays 2 ch downsized and in all speakers (and much louder and better) then why will I use SUR DECODE PLII Music which although plays 2 ch in all 7 speakers but is a bit muffled?
Hope this answers your queries.

Ciao.

BR,
Rajiv

Thanks for the input.

Yes, either that or as I said before a DSP setting like Standard would do for movies

Now here is my doubt... if 7ch stereo also plays 2 ch downsized and in all speakers (and much louder and better) then why will I use SUR DECODE PLII Music which although plays 2 ch in all 7 speakers but is a bit muffled?

Standard 5 Ch/7ch enhancer will simply output the source to all channels after downmixing however PLII music would split the music using some logic and play vocals through Center or if it was a movie and the source was 2 channels, dialogue would come out of center channel. In other words it adds some kind of logic to the source and plays it selectively using all channels rather than just playing the same thing in all channels.

.

Hope that helps.

Thanks & Regards,
Rajiv

Any AVR cannot determine what is a voice and what is instrument by analyzing the sound.
If the sound is recorded in 5.1 or 7.1 channels, the sound engineer puts most vocal oriented signals in center channel. While playback, AVR processes this signal (via HDMI or Optical) and sends center channel signal to center channel speaker.
For a 2 channel signal at source, AVR analyses the frequency range and does some approximation. The algorithm in the processor of the AVR says that if certain frequency falls under some specific range, send it to the center channel and route other frequencies to all other channels. This processing is usually termed as DSP or digital signal processing.

IMHO.

Don't know if this is the correct place for this. Please feel free to move this elsewhere.

I have a RX-V677(international purchase). It was hooked to BenQ W1070, a lighting storm somehow took out the HDMI Out on the receiver and HDMI 1 on the projector. Thankfully the projector is under warranty. Everything else works that was connected to the system, PS4,3 Mac Mini, Tata Sky, Sub. I have tried hooking up the amp to another TV still nothing. Reset/firmware upgrade didn't help either.

How should i go about repairing my receiver? What should be the approx cost of main board replacement? Where should I go in Delhi to get this fixed?

Also, how can i prevent this in the future?
