Not able to succeed even after following the above procedure.

Can anyone tell me what is Straight & Direct Mode on R/C? what does it denote?

Whenever I press "Direct" the volume gets lowered down and when I press "straight" it goes up.

Also I have observed whenever I switch on the AVR first and then the TV, the sound from the media player is passed to the TV directly and I don't hear anything from speakers.

But when I switch on the TV first and after that AVR, TV screen shows Audio System active and then I hear the sound through speakers.

Is this a malfunction or something? Also when I put the HDMI control "off" in TV, I do not encounter such problem.

a. For remote setup, look for the code of the TV in the manual (in the provided CD or you can download the same) than follow the procedure as explained.
b. Direct button, as claimed by Yamaha is to send the sound to the speakers without any sound processing. Only two front speakers work, even subwoofer is not used in this mode. If you are listening vocal based music with crisp notes, pure direct is the suitable mode.
c. It straight mode sound processing is performed and the sub is also put to use but still digital decoding like Dolby PL are not done hence only front speakers and sub are used. Good for music with bass effects.
d. I also face this issue. Easy way to get rid of this problem is to disable HDMI control of the AVR in setup. If you want to retain HDMI control in the avr active, help of AVR gurus will be required.
Rgds

Is there an issue if I buy a Yamaha AV receiver now ? Are Yamaha factories getting closed worldwide ? Is Yamaha planning to come out of the AV receiver space ? I'm planning to buy the Yamaha YHT-298 very soon...Is the after sales and service good enough in New Delhi ?

Not able to succeed even after following the above procedure.
^^ One precondition is that the connections should be active, e.g. if the TV is connected to HDMI1 of AVR then during setup AVR should display HDMI1. Pl try.

I bought a Yamaha RX-V673 a few days back from a person coming back from US.
My STB (Set top box) is not HD. It has a composite Video Out. I set all my devices through the AVR. In the night I want to swich off the audio so I shut down the AVR; the video audio also goes off from my TV. Is there any way that without having to shuffle around my connections I may still get the Video output from my STB ?

You may want to connect the video composite directly to your TV and just run the audio connections to the AVR. The upscaling would be done by your TV and audio processing by the AVR.

On a different note, has anyone experienced any HDMI handshake issues? I have to restart my TV at times after I switch HDMI inputs on AVR (happens only occasionally). Am planning to change the HDMI cable to resolve this.

No.Have not experienced any such issue except that my TV goes blank for few seconds before resuming the display. Only problem is my ARC function isn't working. For that I too will have to switch over to HDMI 1.4. What's your model no?

Hello
I am planning to set up my home theater, The average equipment prices in india will come around 2 lac based on my plan. I am in US now,so i thought to purchase all devices and speakers from here, I am a gold card member of Lufthansa, so no hassles to carry them with me. There are things to be cleared, your advices on the issue will be highly appreciated.

1 The AVR I am planning is YAMAHA A2020. The first thing will comes to mind is Volt ...issue,
1a. Anybody had this kind of set up in india or any other 220v supply countries using Step down transformer for the AVR? Could u pls share your experience?
1b. Do u have any quality issue with this? The Cycle (Hz60-50) is a big matter?
1c. I know there are some shops selling 220v AVR, but they wont give the warranty for the Items, Have you any experience from buying from those sellers?

2 Second Question about the speakers, I am planning Polk Audio, TSi500-Front, TSi200-surround, CS 20-Center (purchased all ready) and PSW 125 (Sub)

2a, In the specification sheet of all speakers, except the sub, are mention in the amplifier specs, not available 220v. What dose it mean? What was thinking up to this time, a speaker doesn't have a volt specification it will work with any volt, because the power is coming from Amp. When I see this info, I am bit confused. Any issues i will face with this speakers when i am using a 220v AVR.
2b Any issues for AVR and these speakers to operate with Step Down Trans?
2c As it mention is the Sub specs, This is supported 220v, so probably I can use the power supply from wall socket without using step down, but I am using Step down for AVR, so the signal will be coming from 110v AVR to a 220v Sub, is that going to make any hassles?

Please share your experience and ideas of all experts in this problem?

Thanks

i have been using a yamaha avr purchased from the US for the last 8 yrs with a step down transformer without any issue. The latest avr's come with multiple voltage range 110-240v. You may consider these preferably. You can use 220v sub with a 110v avr without any problem.

Only AVR needs to be checked for 220v compatible.

Speakers, you don't have to worry.

Just a suggestion : If you have more budget, why not buy next level subs (like say SVS) than PSW125. Since anyway you'll be carrying from US, you can make good use of this luggage limit. In India, its alteast 40% expensive than US.

Hi,

I have a Yamaha system imported from US, running on step down transformer which works with both AVR and subwoofer. Other Speakers do not require any electric supply so dont worry for them.
Using the system for last one year with no problems at all.
Cycles don't matter as step down transformer takes care of this.
AVR only gives sound output to Sub so different operating voltages won't matter.

Do let me know if you have any other questions.

Just purchased the RX-V373 receiver last Sunday....yet to connect to speakers....planning to buy JBL Cinema 500 or the HKTS 9 5.1 speaker set this weekend....Will write about my feedback on this forum...

By the way, is it recommended to connect the AVR to a voltage spike protector in Delhi ?

Hi all,

My drawing room size is 15 x 25 feet.
Would a JBL Cinema 500 or a Harman Kardon HKTS 9 (5.1 speake set) be good enough for a room of this size ?
(I have just purchased a Yamaha Rx-V373).
Or should I go for a mix-n-match of JBL 4 Control One (FL+FR+SL+SR), 1 Control Now (C) + Sub 140P, for my room ?
Has anyone tried out a combination like this, and do they give the same effects as a pre-packaged HTS speaker pack, such as Cinema 500 / HKTS 9 ?
I am planning to buy the speaker set today.
Thanks !

Can the AVR (Rx-473) play videos stored on USB or HDD connected to USB port? For the first time I connected the `HDMI Out' of the AVR to the TV through an HDMI cable. Audio on USB plays fine as earlier but in case of Videos, I see only the menu on the screen and only audio comes through the speakers. Am I doing something wrong or the whole idea is a stupid one ! Gentlemen pl Help!

How were you playing the Video files earlier? Connecting TV via HDMI instead of Analog should not make any difference.
Also are you saying that you are connecting the Hard Disk directly to AVR through USB and you are able to play Audio files!

AVR USB is for music files only. It won't play movies.

I was not using the AVR in the video chain. My connections are like this :
STB(SPDIF)---Co-ax--> Coax-in of AVR ;STB--HDMI-->TV; DVDP(Vid out)--RCA--->TV; DVDP(co-ax audio out)---Co-ax-->AVR; . So the AVR is not connected to TV at all. All video signals go directly to TV from DVDP/STB and all Audios go to AVR.

Yes, I connected HDD to USB port of AVR. But I was able to play only a few songs. After that the AVR was not responding. Other USBs( 1-2 GB) play alright. It was only this reason that I connected the TV to the AVR so that I could see the full content of the HDD. But the AVR did not respond in most of the cases.
@ baijuxavier - Thanks for clearing the matter ! But how do people play videos/movies from USB or external HDD? Presently I am using USB port of the DVDP, but it can not read larger contents. What equipment I should add in the chain so that I could use Audio/Video files stored on HDD? Thanks!
